Louis XIV banished the Cardinal of Retz in Commercy because of his part during the French civil wars. Thanks to the location of Commercy – outside the kingdom and the duchy – the Cardinal could create the hunting area of his dreams…
Susanne Bürner wrote this book about Euville in 2012 for a collaborative project between the Regional Parks of Lorraine, of Ardèche, of Pilat, of Vercors and the “Nouveaux Commanditaires” French foundation. She succeeded to skillfully reproduce enigmatic fictions which stayed in the collective memory thanks to games of light and shadow, sophisticated staging and invisible manipulations. It has enabled the resurgence of unconscious memories.
This illustrated children’s book was written by Elise Fischer and illustrated by Amélie Dufour – and it is suitable from the age of five years old. Everybody knows the madeleine of Commercy – this lovely, round little cake which was very famous in the 18th century at the court of Louis XV and in the early 20th century thanks to Marcel Proust. However, the story of Madeleine Paulmier is little known; she is the brave girl who seized her chance and offered King Stanislas this dessert for the first time in 1755.
The Region of Lorraine, the Department of Meuse and the Town of Commercy make possible this enlarged republication of “Image du patrimoine n°21” thanks to their financial assistance. The first edition was published in 1986 under the leadership of Francis Roussel.
